Energy Crisis In America
Filed Under The Domain Industry | Leave a Comment
I’m going to divulge on domain discussion for a moment and discuss the energy crisis in America. America is transferring a very large percentage of it’s wealth to OPEC or the off shore Oil Producing Countries. America relies heavily on imported oil to survive, and considers it the life blood of commerce across the country. High oil prices, as it relates to our nation’s productivity and wealth is a paramount concern. President Bush made a strong push to open drilling on the coastal regions, Alaska, and the Colorado/Utah regions. This statement addresses the supply side of the economic problem, but hardly touches the demand side. While Congress is out of session, they’ll hopefully come up with some good ideas to address both sides of the economic problem. Ultimately (in a free enterprise economy), prices of goods and services will rise and force oil-producing nations back in line. Oil has gone up too quick/too fast; but, rest assured the market will and indeed is going to react. How? I’m glad you asked! First, automotive makers are jumping on board with hybrid and electric vehicles to work on the demand side of the problem. Secondly, when Congress comes back in session, they need to immediately pass legislation that severely limits speculation in the oil markets. There’s some buzz in the Congressional subcommittees and it sounds like this is about to happen! Lastly, supply needs to grow by opening up previously restricted productions sites. They’re available all over the world and need to be tapped now! This is a three-pronged approach that addresses this growing economic crisis. Without action NOW, the US economy will continue down this disastrous death spiral, slip into recession, ultimately resulting in a full blown depression. Yes, in the long run the market will stabilize. Inflation will ensue and the aggregate demand curve will shift to the right. It’ll come back in line, but with potentially disastrous consequences in the wake. The US Congress needs to act now before it’s too late.

New DJ Site-ThatDJ.COM!
Filed Under The Domain Industry | Leave a Comment
Just spent the morning setting up ThatDj.com. It’s a DJ Web Site for my little brother-in-law! He’s a relatively new DJ servicing a pretty wide area around Sherman, TX, including the Dallas/Ft Worth area. This guy’s nothing short of FANTASTIC. I’ve been to several of his DJ gigs and the crispness of his sound is probably better than any night club you’d ever go to. He’s spent about $3K on lighting and his back end equipment is top of the line. All of the surrounding DJ’s are envious. Frank will knock your socks off! The web site is a basic Wordpress implementation with some nice photos and information about his music, equipment, and sound. He also does on the spot mixing and music creation. One of very few who know how to do this. Probably the best value for a DJ in the Dallas Metroplex.

Appears there’s a move afoot to consolidate advertising among some of the bigger PPC players. Yahoo advertisers (for example) appear to be served on Google sites. Good idea, really! Earlier this month, Marchex announced partnerships with several of the larger advertisers. Marchex owns hundreds of thousand of miniature, mostly local, advertising sites. Appears (now), they’ll almost never run out of advertising space for their type-in traffic customers. Ad consolidation will also drive up key word bidding expanding advertiser CPC. Very good on the big guys for consolidating (if that’s what they’re doing.)

Mini Sites To Monetize Domains
Filed Under The Domain Industry | Leave a Comment
Looking for a good way to monetize your domains? Try mini sites! Mini sites (with uniqune content) will give your domain search engine visibility and enable you to provide just enough content for your visitors to click off one of your ads. Elliott over at Elliottsblog.com did this with TropicalBirds.com. It’s not bad, needs some work, but is exactly what a mini site should look like. Very good job Elliott! Reserve spending time on your mini sites for your good domains. Time is precious, so spend it wisely.

Alexa Expands Rankings
Filed Under The Domain Industry | 1 Comment
Alexa recently expanded its ranking system to handle numbers in excess of 20 million. While domains at this end of the spectrum only receive a trickle of traffic, it will still give you an idea of the amount of traffic coming in. Trial and error will give you at least a small clue of the traffic. Domains ranked at the far end like brews.com probably get no more than 100 hits per month. This domain (by the way) is priced at SEDO for over $100K. It’s a great name, but not much traffic. Remember, it’s all about the traffic!

Selling Domains
Filed Under The Domain Industry | Leave a Comment
In the midst of recession and corporate belt tightening, you may be finding it difficult to sell your domains. While this may be the case for many domainers; don’t despair! Sales are still happening, but it’s definitely gotten slower. My advice to all those out there sitting on good domain assets is to hold. Put your portfolio into a holding pattern now and reap the rewards later. The truly good domains; the category killers are invaluable and will appreciate very well in the coming months. Don’t panic. Hold em, renew em, and exercise some patience. People are still buying. We’re buying. Again, the dot com market and the domain assets within that market are valuable to a wide array of investors. If you’re not making new investments, spend some time developing your star assets. Add some video, add some content, extend your back links, create some forums, stimulate interest in your assets, post to blogs, and create value for your portfolio. Don’t sit back, you’ve got to continuously “move” in this business. The biggest advice: Don’t give up! Have a great Sunday folks!

Web Site Monetization
Filed Under The Domain Industry | Leave a Comment
It’s no secret that content drives monetization, but the trick is finding a niche within a category and exploiting ways to keep the content fresh with user input and fresh ideas. We recently came across a site that does this with apparently little effort. BrewBeerNow is such a site. Check it out when you have time.

Widgets.com Development

Widgets is developing into a very nice search style portal. Should gain in popularity across the domainosphere very quickly. We’d suggest whoever’s managing this one…..allow user upload for widgets based upon software platform… wordpress, joomla, etc. This is a logical progression. Very Very good job on the site so far. We like it!

Big big complaints abound in the domain world. No one clicking? Direct navigation still happens folks, but the problem is most of the younger generation is growing up with search engines and search engines typically don’t like parked names. Whypark tried to solve this, but the search engines countered with “duplicate content” rules of engagement, so now Whypark is being banned. Say bye bye to a not so bad idea. SEO is moving in a direction where original thought is the imperative. Copyrighted web copy is important to site owners because they’re paying so much for it. Hard for someone to develop a 100,000 domain portfolio isn’t it? Saw a pretty good model the other day and I think I’ll start working on some light content for my portfolio. Wordpress offers some good platforms to do this pretty easily and if you’re willing to pay the money and plan on doing some serious writing, you can purchase magazine style themes for Wordpress complete with forums, chat, etc. You can also set them up similar to parked domains like I’ve done with beautyops.com. Took about 5 minutes including a short content article. Parking is tough business. If your parked page isn’t optimized with relevant advertising categories, then forget it. Relevancy is a must. Just a few fleeting thoughts for you. Appreciate any non-spam comments you have on the subject. Feel free to reference your site, but please put a little grey matter into your comments.
Have a good evening folks!

VA Condos

We just secured VACondos.com from alternatedomain.com, a domain reseller. This was probably the best transaction I’ve ever done with another individual or company. Why were we interested in this one? The Virginia housing market (particularly Northern Virginia) is booming. Condo complexes are going up all over the place and developers want to sell! The people in t
